WORCESTER PEARMAIN

Planted in 2009 this dessert variety became part of the archway which was erected in 2011.  Raised by Mr. Hale of Swan Pool near Worcester in 1874 it is thought to be a seedling from Devonshire Quarrenden. However, it was Mr Richard Smith of St John’s Nursery who introduced it to the WHS in1875 where it received a first class certificate. The fruit which ripens in early to mid September has a white flesh with a firm, sweet,  strawberry flavour.  The skin is flushed bright red over a light green/yellow base with russet dots. A hardy tree which is suitable for colder areas.
