WOLVERCOTE PIPPIN

Planted in 2018 this variety is a graft from a tree found in the orchard near St Peter’s Church which was first planted there by the grandfather of Joy Midwinter who lived in Wolvercote at the time. A more recent owner of the orchard, Dr Harold Reading (now deceased), was a geology lecturer at Oxford University and apparently packed loads of these apples for his students to eat on field trips. Its origin is unknown but grafts were taken by the local Bernwode fruit tree nursery where we acquired this tree. A Flattish round apple with pale green skin, liberally flushed with crimson streaks, it has a sweet juicy taste and starts to ripen in late August but can continue ripening over September and even into October.
