One of the first trees to be planted in this orchard in 1994 the Winston was raised in 1920 by nurseryman William Pope at Welford Park, Berkshire. Originally named Winter King it was renamed in 1944 after Winston Churchill. A cross between Cox’s Orange Pippin and Worcester Pearmain.
The fruit has a round to oblong conical shape with a dull purplish-red flush with broad stripes over greenish-yellow that becomes bright red over yellow, while the firm flesh is a pale cream colour. The flavour is rich and aromatic, quite like a Cox but sharper. Ripe from early October and keeps well.
