SERGEANT PEGGY

This is a culinary apple raised by Fred Wastie of Eynsham in 1922 by crossing a Blenheim Orange with a Gloria Mundi.  A large, slightly conical apple, mostly greenish yellow with some touches of crimson.  The flesh is cream coloured with a subacid flavour which cooks to a mellow flavour.  Ripens in early October and stores until January.

There are two trees of this variety in the orchard, one situated on the archway was planted in 2006 and the other, in the corner of the bee garden, was planted a few years later in 2009 with Andrew Smith MP and Evan Harris MP as a twinning with an orchard in Sipson near Heathrow Airport which was under threat by plans a fourth runway.
