Planted in the orchard in 1996 this variety was believed to be raised at Hanwell, near Banbury, Oxfordshire and first recorded 1820. A culinary apple with strong acidity, as suggested by its name.
It was a popular Victorian cooking apple, grown commercially in the West Midlands until replaced by Bramley in the 1930’s. Cooks to a fruity, sharp, puree. A medium to large apple with yellow-green skin, flushed with red on the sunny side and some russeting. It has also provided a good acidity balance in cider making. Ripens in mid-October and can store well through the winter.
